Arlington National Cemetery.

Today was a beautiful day here.  We wanted to go into DC, but we knew there would be big crowds on the Mall because of the Cherry Blossom festivities, so we headed to Arlington National Cemetery.  To my knowledge, I have never been here before- which surprises me, since I love going to cemeteries.  Did you know that one of my very first blog posts was about going to a cemetery when been Ben was in training?  Did you notice the quote "These Honored Remains:  Destiny's Remains When Diplomacy Fails"?  That has stuck with me since I read it, but I digress.

Back to today.  Thomas fell asleep, but Jack was not really interested in hanging out for a long time, so we hit the two things we really wanted to see, the JFK grave and the Tomb of the Unknowns.  I enjoy being able to see and honor those who have fought for our freedom.  I find it interesting, awesome, and peaceful.  I hope to go back and see more without children, or when they are a little older.

The Tomb of the Unknowns was amazing.  The reverence that was felt when watching the solider cross in front of the tomb was palpable.  Such an amazing sight and feeling.  Really, if you haven't been, you definitely should.

I think the reason I love cemeteries so much, is that I know that someday, all that will be left of me is a headstone, and I hope someone will take a moment to wonder what I was like, and maybe make up a story about my life, as I have done to so many names that I have seen.  I can hope that once I am dead, and all those who know me are gone, someone will think of me, even for a moment.  Is that weird?  Probably.  I think it might come from my desire for attention.  Perhaps once I am dead, I won't really care.

I love cemeteries too. We went to Arlington when Elijah was a baby. I loved it. The peace in cemeteries is so amazing.

We went there and I was in such awe and felt such admiration and humility while there. A must-see place to visit, for sure! If you die before me, I will think of you and remember what an awesome mom and sweet woman you are - until then, I'll think of you while you're alive. You are funny!!

This is one of those places that I haven't been to yet and need/want to go. I think I will make it a priority during this summer's homeleave. Love your musings that go with your visit!

We went around this time last year for the first time and I had very similar feelings about it. I also find cemeteries calming. This one is rather special, I agree. I love the way the plain headstones line up. And the changing of the guard is a pretty neat ceremony to watch. A great way to honor those who gave their lives for our country. The JFK memorial is very cool too. It's all especially beautiful with all the blossoms and flowers in the spring.

I think cemeteries are such sacred places. Can't you feel the people who are laid to rest? I LOVED Arlington and the changing of the guards.

It made me laugh that after your musing about people remembering you, you ended it with the possibility of your desire for attention! Funny self reflection. I think a lot of people hope someone will think of them and wonder about their life story. Family history becomes more personal when you think that some of our ancestors might feel that way.
